It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a leading film company and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

In 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving fans curious how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

The preview shows the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the badge attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
