Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That
As any major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
