From Oil Rigs to Online Hacks

It has been touted as a fix for dirty sneakers or prolonging the scent of perfume, and also a remedy for noisy doorways. Users have even applied it to stop the scourge of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Harnessing the Hype
Noticing its viral resurgence, marketers at Unilever enhanced the tricks by asking their own scientists to test them and providing creators with the outcome data.
Assertions that it diminished the sting of chili on the mouth were validated. Similarly supported were ideas it could extend fragrance and rejuvenate purses. Claims that it would brighten smiles or lengthen eyelashes were debunked.
The ‘Social Listening’ Strategy
Print ads and broadcast spots would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. But the Vaseline phenomenon has led decision-makers to turbocharge spending on content creators.
This tracking of digital spaces to shape commercial tactics has been dubbed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, freshly instated, has indicated the goal is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on digital creator content.
Adapting to New Consumer Habits
The company's social media lead, who is leading the online push, said the company was merely adjusting to novel methods of engaging audiences. She said participating on platforms “without killing the party” was paramount.
“How do brands authentically become part of the conversation? That’s always what we’ve been trying to do as brands, back to when people were hanging out their laundry and discussing household products.
“The trend is shifting from a mass communication approach, where we would just transmit messages … Today, it's numerous dialogues, many communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these groups seem specialized, however, they are large.
“Having your brand advocated by consumers, mentioned by individuals, this builds credibility and connection. Content makers are key. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
The strategy reflects seismic changes happening in audience habits, with Gen Z and millennial audiences devoting greater hours to digital networks than legacy broadcast and print media.
The transition is visible in falling revenues for TV and print advertising. Within the United Kingdom, ad revenues for leading TV channels have dropped substantially in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
Additionally, it points to a merging of functions as brands effectively act as media producers, partnering with hundreds of content creators to promote their goods.

“Numerous corporations inform us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the individuals they follow more than they trust ads. This is a persistent pattern.”

Such methods are increasing. Marketing investment on the creator economy is rising at quadruple the rate than the media industry overall. Across the United States, it has over doubled since 2021 and is expected to hit multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Despite the huge changes, experts said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as networks still held the capability to drive countrywide discourse.
The executive noted: “Among the most effective advertising investments is still major broadcast spectacles. It's not a matter of networks declaring: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … I believe there is absolutely a role for them.”
