Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty
The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
