"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous supporters have openly coveted the honor.

The evidence suggests something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the greatest bands, they're a close unit. Their videos frequently depict them striding in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That's the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade resonates with the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project was born from a period of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The lyrics track endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an international fan base.

But the sister act will always be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
